         Magic Machine Knit  Mitten Formula

Another FITB (fill in the blank) pattern by Catherine Goodwin© 2000 (see © notice below)

Notes:  These machine knit mittens have a thumb gusset and thumb shaped in the center of the bed, seam as you go, short-rowed finger shaping and a seam up the outside. The sample was knit with worsted weight yarn on the Bond KP 2 and is sized to fit a women’s s-m hand…the sample numbers (in inches) are in the brackets.
*There are hyper- links in this pattern that take you to photos illustrating the underlined technique.

O With waste yarn, CO G_______st  [ 30  st] Knit 5 rows waste yarn and one row of ravel cord.
O With MY, loose e-wrap cast-on (or knitted back ewrap cast-on) Set RC 000.
O  Knit H ________ rows   [ 14  rows] and reform for ribbing. (This makes a 2 inch ribbed cuff, you may alter, of course.)
O Reset RC 000. Knit  I _________ rows, [ 11 ] increasing one stitch at the beginning of each row.
O Put ½  of all needles OpC in HP, reset RC000
O  On WP needles, knit J______rows [14 ] (begin color patterning now, if applicable) (see photo, beginning thumb gusset)
O Knit 5 rows of waste yarn and remove from bed.Reset RC000
O Put HP needles into FWP, and knit J______rows [14 ]
O Knit these stitches off onto waste yarn, too. You now won’t have anything on the bed! You will have a rectangle with a slit in it, and you will be knitting an upside down triangle in this slit to fill it in and make the thumb gusset. (see  photo, removing from bed)
O Hang the two sts that are on either side of the bottom of the slit onto the two center needles (purl side facing you) Knit 2 rows.
O Hang the next two sts on either side of the slit onto the bed (this will make 4 sts), Knit 2 rows (see photo)
O Continue in this manner until you have knit up the thumb gusset triangle to the top of the rectangle.
O Now finish knitting the thumb by knitting K_______ rows. [ 12  ]
O Knit 2 more rows, decreasing at the beginning and end of each row.
O Draw thread through sts and remove thumb from bed (now you don't have anything on the bed again!)
O Seam up the inside seam of the thumb.
O Re-hang both sides of the mittens back onto the bed, making sure purl side is facing you and tucking the thumb back behind the knitting and out of the way. (see photo)
O Knit L_______ rows [25] (continuing patterning, if applicable)
O Put ½ needles OpC into HP.
O You will now be short-rowing each half to shape the top of the mitten, which will be grafted together, If you prefer, you can use standard decreases instead, and sew the sides of the top together, rather than grafting.
O On WP needles, *move 1 needle on carriage side into HP, knit row*
O Continue in this manner, from *to* until you have M_____sts [ 7 ] left on needle bed. (This will take careful placement of extra weights, such as S-hook weights.)
O * Move needles OpC into FWP with latches open (not the needles that are in HP for the other top of the mitten, just the ones on the mitten tip you are working on), knit across.*
O Repeat from * to *
O Knit one more row across  all the stitches on the mitten half that you have been short rowing
O Knit these stitches off onto waste yarn.
O Move needles remaining on bed into WP and repeat mitten top shaping as above.
O Graft together mitten top stitches that are on waste yarn.
O Sew up side seam.
O Make another mitten!
