Spindolyns.....FAQ

(For complete information, be sure and read the 4 page instruction sheet enclosed with your spindolyn)
  • What type of yarn or spinning are the Spindolyns best suited for?
Because it does not drop and you can slow it down or speed it up to your own pace, it is very suitable for spinning very even yarns, and for controlling the amount of twist. To add more twist to the length of yarn you have just spun, you simply give the spindolyn another spin before winding on. The spindolyn does not hold a large quantity of yarn, nor is it a super fast production spinner. It is, however, a very relaxing and easy to control way of spinning.

  • How do I wind off of the spindolyn?
Wind your newly spun yarn off the spindolyn shaft the same way that you wound on, with the spindolyn riding in its base and the yarn held out perpendicular to the shaft.

  • How do I ply with the spindolyn?
The best way to ply is to wind yarn off  of the spindolyn shaft as above, and onto balls with a ball winder, notespinnde, or by hand around a felted ball core. When you have two (or more) of singles you may ply them with another style of drop spindle. I am currently successfully experimenting with plying on the Alto Spindolyn and would appreciate any feedback.

  • How do I care for the spindolyn?
Keep yarn and dust off of the shaft below the whorl, lest it get into the tube and slow down the spin. Occasionally put a drop of light spinning or sewing machine oil inside the brass tube.

  • Are the Alto and Original Spindolyns interchangeable?
No. They have a different shaft length and different quill length.

  • What happened to the other styles of Spindolyn? They have been put on a shelf for the time being, this is my current favorite base and whorl to spin on and is what I am making and offering at this time. I have two other designs in the prototype stage and hope to introduce them soon. The previous designs will come back in various incarnations.
