 Spindolyn ™*
~the Original Quill Supported Spindle™~

The unique and original "quill supported" engineering eliminates the "drop" of a drop spindle, the need for the support of a support spindle and gives a smooth, fast spin, great for medium fine to fine yarns.
The Spindolyn is made of two parts, the spindle whorl with it's brass shaft, and the wooden base with it's specially shaped brass tube that the shaft rides in. This "drop free" arrangement can tuck comfortably into your lap or the crook of a crossed knee. It is perfect for spinning sitting down, in the car, between your feet on a low stool, in your easy chair or while lounging on the couch!
The hardwood base and whorl is finished with an oil based stain in a warm, neutral tone. The final coat is a hand rubbed non-toxic oil finish of my own recipe (beeswax, coconut oil, mineral oil and all natural lemon oil) It may be ordered unfinished upon request.

~Our Shipping Policy~ (please read)

As with all of our products, each item is individually made on a per order basis. The glue and finish has to be completely dry and the quality checked before the spindles can be shipped out. Most order ship within a few days, but I am a one woman business, and sometimes, if it is a time of high demand, I can run as much as two weeks behind. But be assured I am pedaling as fast as I can. If you are in a great hurry for a special reason, like a birthday, please email and I will try my best to accommodate your need for speed. You may check my blog for current wait list length.

FAQ
(For complete information, be sure and read the 4 page instruction sheet enclosed with your spindolyn)

  • What weight of yarn is the spindolyn best suited for?
The spindolyn is light weight, and "wants" to spin medium fine, to fine yarns. Because it does not drop and you can slow it down or speed it up to your own pace, it is very suitable for spinning very even yarns, and for controlling the amount of twist. To add more twist to the length of yarn you have just spun, you simply give the spindolyn another spin before winding on.

  • How do I wind off of the spindolyn?
Wind your newly spun yarn off the spindolyn shaft the same way that you wound on, with the spindolyn riding in its base and the yarn held out perpendicular to the shaft.

  • How do I ply with the spindolyn?
The best way to ply is to wind yarn off  of the spindolyn shaft as above, and onto balls with a ball winder, notespinnde, or by hand around a felted ball core. When you have two (or more) of singles you may ply them with another style of drop spindle.

  • How do I care for the spindolyn?
Keep yarn and dust off of the shaft below the whorl, lest it get into the tube and slow down the spin. Occasionally put a drop of light spinning or sewing machine oil inside the brass tube.

  • What happened to the other styles of Spindolyn? They have been put on a shelf for the time being, this is my current favorite base and whorl to spin on and is what I am making and offering at this time. I have two other designs in the prototype stage and hope to introduce them soon. The previous designs will come back in various incarnations.

You can keep updated on spindolyn design on my fiber blog, Dangling Threads.
